CIRCULAR ECONOMY PILOT STUDY
On the Ground
DATA COLLECTION
Effective environmental stewardship relies on precise, verifiable data. Green VI conducts systematic litter sampling and waste characterization across the Territory to establish clear baselines of land-based pollution. Using the CleanHub digital platform, we track real-time Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the WE RECYCLE network, ensuring full transparency and traceability for every pound of material recovered. Furthermore, our team conducts brand audits on major litter items to identify top pollution sources and trains local partners, youth, and volunteers on standardized data collection methodologies – building regional capacity to transform raw environmental data into targeted policy and community solutions.
Long Bay Beach Demonstration
Under the international PROMAR initiative, Green VI is advancing targeted marine litter prevention through a high-impact demonstration project at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change (MENRCC) and aligned with the national Beach Plan, this initiative pairs active beach litter sampling and plastic tracking with the rollout of dedicated public recycling stations. To address pollution at its source, the project is also piloting eco-friendly, biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastics with local vendors. By combining routine field data collection, sustainable product testing, and public waste diversion, this demonstration site establishes a measurable, data-driven blueprint for protecting coastal ecosystems across the BVI.
PLASTIC FAB LAB
Circular Manufacturing in Action: The Plastic Fab Lab serves as a localized, circular manufacturing hub that transforms source-separated plastics into high-value, durable BVI products. Operating as a practical extension of the territory-wideWE RECYCLEprogramme, this facility utilizes specialized processing equipment to shred, extrude, press, and remold recovered plastic into functional local commodities. By converting a complex material stream into practical community assets, the Fab Lab demonstrates the tangible economic and environmental viability of keeping resources on-island.
DEPOSIT REFUND AND PLASTIC BAN
Physical recycling infrastructure is only half the equation—lasting change requires supportive policy. The Government of the Virgin Islands recently completed a public consultation process focusing on two critical reforms: a phased ban on targeted single-use plastics and the rollout of a national Deposit-Refund System (DRS). These key pieces of legislation eliminate unnecessary plastic before it ends up as litter that impacts environmental and human health. By giving containers tangible financial value, the DRS acts as one of the most effective anti-litter and anti-mosquito tools available—ensuring materials are returned to the system at high rates.
CLEAN UPS
Ocean and island health depend on proactive community stewardship. In partnership with local non-profit Beyond the Reef, Green VI coordinates targeted clean-ups to tackle debris in remote cays, coastal mangroves, and hard-to-reach bays across the Territory. Alongside these specialized expeditions, our regular monthly clean-ups empower residents, businesses, and youth to take active ownership of their local environment. Every clean-up is systematically monitored and weighed—turning volunteer efforts into verifiable data that tracks waste trends and measures total landfill diversion. By connecting hands-on community action with scientific tracking, we inspire individuals to live cleaner, more sustainable lives while safeguarding our shared natural beauty.
OUTREACH
True environmental change begins with an informed and engaged community. Green VI drives widespread awareness through dedicated, curriculum-aligned lesson plans delivered in local schools, alongside dynamic interactive pop-ups at public events across the Territory. To ensure our programs meet community needs, we utilize Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) surveys that provide measurable baseline data on environmental behaviors. By combining hands-on training on plastic pollution, vector prevention, and practical waste reduction strategies, we equip residents of all ages with the knowledge and tools needed to turn awareness into everyday action.

Annie’s flagship retail outlet is inside Nutmeg & Co. in Road Town, Tortola. Her custom-made goods are also found at outer-island resorts and in the USVI.

Green Schools
Through the collaborative SMART Schools project, Green VI has successfully integrated environmental sustainability frameworks into the BVI public school system. With 13 of 15 schools now SMART Certified, we continue to scale this educational impact through our dedicated Green Schools programme. This initiative fosters resilience and environmental awareness in every student by deploying practical, hands-on systems – including recycling stations, school gardens, mosquito control protocols, clean drinking water systems, and energy efficiency audits and retrofits – as well as curriculum-aligned activities and lessons.
